Coastal San Diego

Coronado Photographer

Coronado feels like a small town that happens to have a world-famous beach. The wide, sparkling sand in front of the Hotel del Coronado is some of the prettiest in California, and the island's quiet, tree-lined streets make for a relaxed, classic backdrop.

It's a favorite for family sessions and beach weddings — golden light, the red turrets of the Del, and enough space to spread out even on a busy Saturday.

Getting there: About 20 minutes from downtown across the Coronado Bridge.

Local know-how: The bridge backs up at rush hour — budget extra time or take the ferry. Beach ceremonies need a Coronado permit; the flat, wide sand is stroller- and grandparent-friendly.

When to Shoot

Coronado through the year

  • May Gray & June Gloom

The marine layer often keeps the coast overcast into the afternoon — soft, even light, but plan for gray skies.

  • Peak beach season

Summer is when the beach in front of the Del is busiest — early mornings are calmest.

  • Local summer

September and October often bring the coast's warmest, clearest days, with fewer crowds once school is back.
