Coastal San Diego

La Jolla Photographer

La Jolla is the crown jewel of the San Diego coast — dramatic sandstone bluffs, tide pools, and light that turns gold an hour before sunset.

The trick to shooting La Jolla well is knowing where the crowds aren't and when the light is right. Some coves clear out at golden hour, and there are tucked-away spots most photographers walk right past.

Getting there: Central to my service area — about 15 minutes from downtown San Diego.

Local know-how: Metered parking fills fast on weekends — arrive early or plan a weekday session. Ceremonies on the bluffs at Scripps Park require a City of San Diego permit, which I'll help you sort out.

When to Shoot

La Jolla through the year

  • Seal pupping season

Children's Pool beach is closed December 15 – May 15 while harbor seals give birth — we shoot the bluffs around it instead.

  • May Gray & June Gloom

The marine layer often keeps the coast overcast into the afternoon — soft, even light, but plan for gray skies.

  • Local summer

September and October often bring the coast's warmest, clearest days, with fewer crowds once school is back.
