Coastal San Diego

Point Loma Photographer

Point Loma delivers the most dramatic coastline in the city — the layered sandstone cliffs at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park glow orange as the sun drops, and the views from Cabrillo stretch across the whole bay. It's ideal for moody, cinematic couple sessions.

Just inland, the restored barracks of Liberty Station give a completely different look — arches, lawns, and public art — so we can pair wild cliffs with clean architecture in one evening.

Getting there: About 15 minutes from downtown San Diego.

Local know-how: Sunset Cliffs has no railings in places — safety first, so we stick to stable vantage points. Cabrillo closes early and charges entry. Street parking near the cliffs fills right at sunset.

When to Shoot

Point Loma through the year

  • Gray whale migration

Gray whales pass the point on their yearly migration — the Cabrillo overlooks are a good place to watch.

  • May Gray & June Gloom

The marine layer often keeps the coast overcast into the afternoon — soft, even light, but plan for gray skies.

  • Local summer

September and October often bring the coast's warmest, clearest days, with fewer crowds once school is back.
